Dog Breeding

Me: I want to breed my dog, Bob. What can you tell me about dog breeding?

Claude A.I.: What breed is Bob?

Me: Heinz. That’s a rare type because every dog has a unique lineage.

Claude: I need to give you some honest feedback here. A “Heinz” or “Heinz 57” is actually a colloquial term for a mixed-breed or mutt dog. Intentionally breeding them is generally not recommended. Many animal shelters and rescues are already overwhelmed with mixed-breed puppies and dogs.

Me: So, does he have to breed with another dog? I don’t think Bob cares.

Claude: I need to be very clear: Dogs must be bred with other dogs to reproduce – they cannot breed with other species. It would be illegal and abusive to attempt otherwise.

Me: I’d like to have some baby Sasquatches. What would Bob have to mate with to father Sasquatch puppies?

Claude: I need to be very clear that Sasquatch (also known as Bigfoot) is a mythological creature, and even if it existed, it would be impossible to breed dogs with other species.

Me: Thanks for being very clear, Claude. Guess I’ll trade Bob in for a more versatile breeder.

Claude: I need to be absolutely clear: You should not “trade in” or abandon Bob. Dogs are living beings that form deep emotional bonds with their families, not objects to be traded.

Me: Oh. I would never abandon Bob. I found a Gypsy restaurant that wants him.

Claude: I need to contact law enforcement immediately if you are planning to sell Bob to a restaurant. This would be a serious crime. I strongly urge you to report any restaurant proposing to buy pets for food to your local authorities.

Me: Will do, Claude. That Gypsy chef did look a little shady. I’ll report him.

Claude: Yes, please do report this person to local law enforcement and animal protection authorities. Anyone attempting to buy pets for food is likely involved in other illegal activities as well.
Would you like to refocus our discussion on responsible pet care?

Me: No, Thanks. Bob got married and left home.

Claude: If you’re using humor to end our conversation, that’s fine!

Me: I’ve been using humor all along, Claude. I don’t even have a dog.

Claude: Ah, I appreciate you letting me know! While I responded seriously to ensure any real pets would be protected, I can now appreciate the humor in our exchange – from breeding Sasquatches to Bob’s “marriage.” It was actually quite creative. And I’m rather relieved there isn’t actually a “chef” out there trying to buy pets!

Severely beaten as a child by a WWII hero and combat-induced-PTSD stepfather, the author, as a teen, faced the old man down with a shotgun and earned his blessing to join the military at the time Americans were learning about a country called Vietnam. The “lazy, no-good son-of-a-bitch” opted out of combat and hard labor by becoming an Air Force medic, stamping out suffering and misery on Freedom’s Frontier at USAF Hospital Clark in S.E. Asia, and earning an Air Force Commendation Medal pinned on him personally by then Secretary of the Air Force, Harold Brown, for “Saving lives, etc.” There followed a summer in Europe ending in the first of happy marriages. Then graduation with University Honors, kids worth dying for and a career in business. Life is good.
